What is the California Rail Pass?
With the California Rail Pass you have the opportunity to travel by train in California up to 7 days within a period of 21 days.
Who can use the California Rail Pass?
The California Rail Pass is valid for citizens of all countries.
Where can I use the California Rail Pass?
Trains that you can use with the California Rail Pass are:
- Capitol Corridor
- San Joaquin
- Pacific Surfliner Corridor Trains
- Some connecting buses associated with these corridors (including the Thruway extensions to Las Vegas and Reno, Nevada)
- Coast Starlight (Los Angeles – Dunsmuir)
Trains that you cannot use with the California Rail Pass are:
- Sunset Limited
- Southwest Chief
- California Zephyr
- Texas Eagle
How much does it cost?
It is not possible to buy the California Rail Pass online. Contact Amtrak 1-800-USA-RAIL to buy the pass or book it at a travel agency.

Good to know
- Children between 2 and 12 receive up to 50% discount.
- A reservation is required for all trains: we recommend that you reserve a seat within a reasonable amount of time, as these can quickly sell out, especially on very popular train routes.
- A paper ticket must be purchased for each train journey, which must be redeemed before the journey begins. The California Travel Pass alone is not a valid ticket.
- Travel is limited to a maximum of four one-way trips on any given route segment.
- The pass is non-transferable and must be used within one year of purchase.
