What is the VIA Rail Canada Pass?

VIA Rail Canada offers a variety of different passes with which you can explore Canada. Their passes are mainly for the eastern part of the country, but the Canada Pass allows you to travel the whole country. The possibility to choose flexibly how many routes you want to travel and which zones make these VIA Rail Canada passes very convenient.

Who can use the VIA Rail Canada Pass?

This pass is available to everyone – locals and tourists alike. Travelers between the ages of 12 and 25 receive attractive discounts.

Where can I use the VIA Rail Canada Pass?

With the VIA Rail Canada Pass, you can travel to various areas of Eastern Canada. However, there is also a Canada Pass with which you can discover the entire country from the east to the west coast.

The Zones
The different VIA Rail Canada passes allow you to explore different regions of Canada. These are divided as follows:

Zone 1: Toronto – London – Sarnia – Windsor
Zone 2: Kingston – Toronto
Zone 3: Montréal – Ottawa – Kingston
Zone 4: Québec City – Montréal – Ottawa
Zone 5: Québec City – Windsor
Zone 6: the entire network from coast to coast

Different Passes

Multi-Pass

You can choose between 10, 20, 50, or 100 transferable travel credits (one-way trips) that you can use within six months. These can be used for zones 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

What makes this pass particularly practical is that it is transferable. It allows you to have a different person travel with you on each trip. Another benefit of the Multi-Pass is that if you would like to upgrade your ticket from Economy to Business, you will receive a discount of up to 50%.

 

Student Pass

This pass is suitable for all young people between 12 and 25 years of age with valid proof of age and photo identification or for people aged 26 and over with a valid student ID or ISIC card. You will receive 50 travel credits (one-way trips) that can be used within 120 days. These can be used for zones 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

This pass is particularly favorable. You pay only $9.18 per one-way trip (based on 50 one-way trips in zones 1 to 4). The pass is also available all year round, so you can purchase this pass for each semester. You also get a 50% discount on the economy fare if the Escape fare is sold out on your preferred train.

 

Youth Pass

This pass is suitable for all young people between 12 and 25 years of age with valid proof of age and photo identification or for young people aged 26 and over with a valid student ID or ISIC card. You will receive 6 travel credits (one-way trips) that you can use within 6 months. These can be used for zones 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

If you wish to upgrade your ticket to Business Class, you will receive a 25% discount. You will also receive a 50% discount on the Economy fare if the Escape fare is sold out.

 

Leisure Pass

With this pass, you will receive 6 travel credits (one-way trips) that you can use within 6 months. These can be used for zones 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

If you wish to upgrade your ticket to Business Class, you will receive a 25% discount. You will also receive a 50% discount on the Economy fare if the Escape fare is sold out.

 

Canada Pass

This pass is ideal for frequent travelers, as it allows you to travel the entire network and explore Canada from coast to coast. You can decide how many credits and in which validity period you want to use the pass. You can choose between 6, 12, or unlimited travel credits (one-way trips), which can be used within 15, 30, or 60 days. These can be used for Zone 6 (all of Canada).

When you upgrade to the Sleeper Plus class, you will receive a 25% discount if you want to upgrade to a cabin and a 40% discount if you want to upgrade to a sleeping berth. As well as a 40% discount if you want to upgrade to Business and Touring Class.

 

Commuter Pass

With this pass, you will receive between 20 travel credits (one-way trips) that can be used within 30 days. These can be used for the following routes from/to Toronto:

  • Brantford
  • Oshawa
  • Port Hope
  • London
  • Woodstock

How does it work?

Once you have purchased your VIA Rail Canada Pass, you can log in to your profile and then book your single or round-trip ticket within the validity period and zone of your rail pass.

Then, when you select “Discount Type” on the passenger information screen at the ticket machine, you can enter the 13-digit serial number of your rail pass in the Serial Number field. The corresponding number of credits will then be deducted from your rail pass if your journey meets the conditions of your rail pass.
