Train Companies

The rail network in Bosnia and Herzegovina is operated by two railway companies.

The ZFBH (Željeznice Federacije Bosne i Hercegovine) operates lines throughout the country and also includes the main line Doboj – Sarajevo – Ploče.

The ZRS (Željeznice Republike Srpske) operates lines in the Srpska region of the country and also operates on the Doboi – Banja Luka – Novi Grad line.

TrAIN tYPES

BH Trains are operated by ZFBH and offer express services

  • 1st and 2nd Class offered with reclining seats
  • Reservations required
  • Trains are equipped with air conditioning, WiFi, and power sockets as well as a bar carriage with snacks and drinks
  • Express services include:
    • Sarajevo – Mostar – Capljina
    • Sarajevo – Doboj – Banja Luka – Bihac
  • No bicycles allowed

Putnički Voz operated by ZFBH, are regional trains connecting Sarajevo to Kakanj, Konjic, Maglaj, and Zenica, as well as run from Tuzla to Doboj.

  • 2nd Class only

Putnički Voz operated by ZRS, are regional trains connecting Banja Luka to Novi Grad, Dobrljin, and Doboj,

  • 2nd Class only

Helpful Tip: Bicycles are not permitted on any trains in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

 

There are no direct train connections from Sarajevo to Belgrade, Serbia, or to Zagreb, Croatia; however, you may travel to Zagreb by train and take a taxi transfer over the Croatian border and then get on another train to continue your journey.

Una-Bahn runs between Sarajevo to Bihac.

Best Time To Travel To Bosnia

We recommend travelling anytime between April to September for ideal sightseeing weather, outdoor activities, mosque exploration, or for a seaside holiday in Neum. Keep in mind since Neum ist he the one and only coastal town in Bosnia, it gets busy in the summer.

Take a visit to Mostar to check out the Red Bull Cliff Diving Competition or in the autumn all throughout the country you can see the trees turn fiery colors.
